WHAT ARE SIGHT WORDS?
A sight word is a word that can be read without having to sound it out. Sight words are often called whole word, high frequency, or learn-to-read words. Kids are expected to recognize these words as soon as they see them. These words appear frequently in our reading and writing text.
When children practice sight words, they are able to read more fluently and have a better comprehension of the text.
Eventually, with enough practice, they are less likely to not understand the words they are reading. They just recognize them by looking at them.
Why does a child need to know sight words?
Some of the most frequently used English words do not follow the common letter-sound patterns and cannot be sounded out using phonics knowledge. These words need to be learned early, as fluency in reading depends on the number of known words.
The more words a child knows automatically, the easier it will be for them to learn how to read. The child needs to build up a store of words that they can recognize instantly and effortlessly to become fluent in reading.
